What we've done:

-In January 2017, Cassie Yackley, PsyD. came and presented Trauma Informed Care to all staff and faculty.

-We are piloting our first Social/Emotional Curriculum with our Pre K and Kindergarten classes in November 2017. Each classroom is provided with Lion's Quest curriculum based on their grade level. The curriculum was purchased from The Lion's Club International Foundation. This social/emotional curriculum includes emotion identification, self-awareness and personal behavioral control.

-We are piloting a "self-regulation box" to be implemented in each of the first grade classrooms to improve students' ability to control their own bodies when they are feeling overwhelmed or stressed by using a zone system.

Each student is able to learn about the zones they experience throughout the day and ways to manage their feelings in each zone. With the help of school counselors and teachers, students are learning self-regulation and emotional identification.

 
-Two Trees of Thankfulness were painted in the hallway of PES. Grades Pre-K through 2 were read the book Happy Thanksgiving Biscuit by Alyssa Satin Capucilli and grades 3-5 were read Thanksgiving is For Giving Thanks by Margaret Sutherland. Each student was encouraged to think about what they are thankful for, just as the characters in the book identified things for which they were thankful. This community building activity allowed students and staff to learn about each other and promote gratefulness.

Each grade will have "self-regulation" boxes during the 2017-2018 school year.

DISTRICT WIDE: 
-Lynn Lyons, LICSW, from Concord, NH will be coming on February 6 from 6-8 pm to speak to staff, families and the community. The presentation is called "The Gift of Anxiety and Depression Prevention: Skills We Can (and Should!) Be Teaching Our Children." Untreated anxiety in a child is one of the top predictors of depression in young adults. For those that work with anxious families, this comes as no surprise. In this presentation, Lynn focuses on how interrupt the most common anxiety and depression enhancing patterns–including reassurance, accommodation, avoidance, and three cognitive habits—and adopt instead a process-based “umbrella approach” that changes both the child and adults’ ingrained patterns of thinking and behaving.

-At each school we have begun social and emotional learning classrooms. Each has a special education teacher who is available to provide support to students in a smaller classroom setting with individualized instruction to focus on their social and emotional needs which impact their ability to complete school work or daily activities of school life. At PES, the teacher is Ms. Bradshaw, at PMS the teacher is Mr. Evans and at PHS the teacher is Mrs. Scanio.

-Dr. Lessard, Director of Student Services, Mr. Hoffman, Assistant Director of Student Services, Mrs. Kilabuk, School Psychologist and Mr. Alexander, Assistant Principal at Pelham High School attended the School Mental Health Conference in Washington DC in October 2017. The group presented their plan to other school district representatives about developing a comprehensive school mental health system- including a multi-tiered system of support for behavior (MTSS-B) and social/emotional learning (SEL).
